The National Center for DWI Courts is the key organization to organize and host training programs for courts that want toDWI Court Training Program Picture become a DWI Court. With the funding and partnership of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), two training programs were developed and implemented to assist courts to become a DWI Court, a 3½ day course and a 1 day course. Which training program a court attends, will depend on the current status of the court.

The 3½ day training program is designed for teams that are not currently operating a drug or DWI Court. They are held at the DWI Academy Court locations, where the teams attending the training programs are able to observe role model DWI Courts in action. The one-day training program is designed for operational Drug Court teams that would like to expand their target population to include impaired drivers. Those training programs are held around the country.

These training programs are team oriented only with team members representing the following professions all present

  • Judge
  • Prosecutor
  • Defense Counsel
  • Treatment representative
  • DWI/Drug Court coordinator/ Planning coordinator
  • Expert in research or evaluation
  • Probation/Supervision
  • Law Enforcement

For 2010, the following training programs have been scheduled:

3½ Day Training Programs:
March 8-11, 2010 Newport Beach, CA
April 26-29, 2010 Springfield, MO
August 2-5, 2010 Traverse City, MI
September 21-24, 2010 Athens, GA

1 Day Training Programs:
March 29, 2010 St. Louis, MO
June 21, 2010 Salt Lake City, UT
October 8, 2010 Washington, D.C.

While these training programs would not happen without support from NHTSA, it is important to also recognize the support of the individual State Highway Safety Offices (SHSO). It is the SHSO that covers the travel costs for the team, such as airfare, lodging, and meals. In offering training through NCDC, NHTSA and the SHSO’s are demonstrating a commitment to working with local communities to prevent and control impaired driving, substance abuse and crime. With a well trained team, that commitment will be carried on.

Scholarship Funding is Available for DWI Court Training Program

For the first time for NCDC, Scholarship funding through a grant from the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA), U.S. Department of Justice, is now available to defray some of the costs associated with travel and lodging for the NCDC DWI Court Training Programs.

For the 3½ day training program (Planning), the scholarship application can be submitted with the application. For the 1 day training program (Enhancement), the scholarship application should not be submitted until after acceptance into the program. This is because the per diem levels change based on the location for the program. The locations for the 1 day training program will not be set until after all teams have been approved.
