The National Center for DWI Courts is the key organization to organize and host training programs for courts that want to
become a DWI Court. With the funding and partnership of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), two training programs were developed and implemented to assist courts to become a DWI Court, a 3½ day course and a 1 day course. Which training program a court attends, will depend on the current status of the court.
The 3½ day training program is designed for teams that are not currently operating a drug or DWI Court. They are held at the DWI Academy Court locations, where the teams attending the training programs are able to observe role model DWI Courts in action. The one-day training program is designed for operational Drug Court teams that would like to expand their target population to include impaired drivers. Those training programs are held around the country.
These training programs are team oriented only with team members representing the following professions all present
- Judge
- Prosecutor
- Defense Counsel
- Treatment representative
- DWI/Drug Court coordinator/ Planning coordinator
- Expert in research or evaluation
- Probation/Supervision
- Law Enforcement
2011 DWI Court Training Programs
The National Center for DWI Courts (NCDC) is now taking applications for 2011's DWI Court training programs. The deadline to submit an application is August 27, 2010, to the State Highway Safety Office, and September 15, 2010, to the NHTSA, if the team is able to obtain funding from another source. The locations for the 3 ½ day training programs have not been determined as of yet due to the fact that new DWI Academy Courts are being determined. The 1 day training programs will be determined after all Enhancement applications have been received. This will allow the locations to be set within the region of the teams applying.

While these training programs would not happen without support from NHTSA, it is important to also recognize the support of the individual State Highway Safety Offices (SHSO). It is the SHSO that covers the travel costs for the team, such as airfare, lodging, and meals. In offering training through NCDC, NHTSA and the SHSO’s are demonstrating a commitment to working with local communities to prevent and control impaired driving, substance abuse and crime. With a well trained team, that commitment will be carried on.
