“Veterans Treatment Courts present an opportunity for us to come to the aid of the men and women in uniform who are suffering as a result of their sacrifice to this country and should be expanded to serve all veterans in need.”

- General (Ret.) Barry McCaffrey

New Training for Veterans Treatment Courts Launched!

The National Drug Court Institute (NDCI) and the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) are pleased to announce the launch of the 2010 Veterans Treatment Court Planning Initiative (VTCPI).

This pilot training program will be conducted October 4-8, 2010 in Buffalo, New York.  The VTCPI curriculum is a collaborative effort of NDCI, BJA, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the GAINS Center, the Battered Women’s Justice Project, and numerous Veterans Treatment Court professionals.  It will consist of presentations, group breakout sessions, and a visit to the Buffalo Veterans Treatment Court – the first Veterans Treatment Court in the United States – in order to observe case discussions and status hearings.

Ten (10) court teams will be permitted to attend this training and applications will be reviewed and approved in the order that they are received.

NDCI has been provided funding to award travel scholarships to defray the cost of airfare, ground transportation, parking, mileage, and per diem for approved jurisdictions. The application request for travel scholarships will begin after jurisdictions are approved for inclusion in VTCPI.

Be among the first in the nation to take part in this comprehensive Veterans Treatment Court training!

Note: the application process for the pilot training will close on August 7.

What are Veterans Treatment Courts?

Veterans Treatment Courts are hybrid Drug and Mental Health Courts that use the Drug Court model to serve veterans struggling with addiction, serious mental illness and/or co-occurring disorders. They promote sobriety, recovery and stability through a coordinated response that involves cooperation and collaboration with the traditional partners found in Drug and Mental Health Courts, with the addition of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs health care networks, the Veterans' Benefits Administration, volunteer veteran mentors and veterans and veterans' family support organizations.
